Robin S. Lattimore, of Rutherfordton, NC, has received the first annual Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Distinguished Educator Award. Lattimore has worked in the field of education for more than 25 years. He has served as TJCA’s upper campus librarian and student research coordinator since 2011.
Lattimore is an award-winning historian and author of more than 40 books and scholarly monographs that celebrate the people, places, and traditions of the American South. In addition to his printed works, Lattimore served as the chief historian and commentator for the Emmy-nominated, PBS documentary film, “Gold Fever and the Bechtler Mint” produced by UNC-TV. He has served as a guest commentator on numerous television and radio programs across the southeast, and has served as a consultant for programs appearing on the History Channel and the Discovery Channel.
His knowledge and passion for local and regional history is often reflected in the educational opportunities that he provides TJCA’s students. In the past year, Lattimore showcased collections of significant historical artifacts, related to the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the nation’s first gold rush (1799-1840), in the upper campus media center. In turn, he also provided opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to participate in interactive discussions about the history and heritage of Rutherford County, NC.
