Men’s tennis advances in state playoffs; T/F has strong showing at Conference Championship

 

AVONDALE The Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) varsity men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the 1A North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs with a 6-0 win over South Stokes on Wednesday afternoon. 

Charlie Schweppe (6-1, 6-0), Aidan O’Reilly (6-0, 6-0), Lukas Hobbs (6-3, 6-0), James Hamrick (6-1, 6-2), Hunter Plaster (6-0, 7-5) and Turner Cook (6-0, 6-1) were all victorious in singles play. 

The Gryphons (10-2, 9-0) will now travel to Bishop McGuiness on Tuesday to face the Villains in a second-round matchup. 

Women’s T/F takes second overall, men finish third

BESSEMER CITY — The TJCA track and field team competed for the 1A/2A Southern Piedmont Conference Championship on Wednesday with the women’s team taking second and the men’s team placing third.

Girls 4X800-meter relay, Sophia Smart (Girls 1600-meter run), Kaitlyn Rowe (3200-meter run), Boys 4X800-meter relay, Boys 4X200-meter relay, Carson Gilliam (1600-meter run, 800-meter run, 3200-meter run)

Second-place finishers

Kaitlyn Rowe (Girls 800-meter run), Audrey Friedman (Girls 3200-meter run), Girls 4X400 meter-relay, Owen Pierce (Boys 400-meter dash), Michael Ledbetter (3200-meter run), Boys 4X400-meter relay.

Third-place finishers

Keren Hargro (Girls Discus Throw), Rainey Thompson (Girls High Jump), Kaitlyn Rowe (Girls 1600-meter run), Sophia Smart (Girls 800-meter run), Emma Deviney (Girls 3200-meter run), Ian Richards (1600-meter run, 3200-meter run)
