COVID Test FAQ for Parents
Please keep your child home if your child is having any of the following symptoms:
- Fever or chills
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Muscle or body aches
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
When your child is absent from school due to an illness, please call or email the school nurse. She may be reached via email at [email protected] Be specific about the reason why your child will be staying home, i.e. sore throat, congestion, fever, cough, etc. If symptom(s) are COVID-like symptoms, your child cannot return to school until they have completed a 10-day quarantine since the first day symptoms started or with documentation (provided to the school) of a negative COVID-19 PCR or Antigen test result. Your medical provider may also provide you with an alternative diagnosis that will allow your child to return to school. Your child will also need to be fever-free for 24 hours in order to be able to return.
NO HOME TEST IS ACCEPTABLE
If your child is present at school with any of the above symptoms during school hours, with or without a fever, your child will be sent home.

What is the COVID-19 Testing Program?
Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy's COVID-19 Testing Program offers free, testing to both TJCA-students and TJCA-staff for COVID-19. Diagnostic testing means that testing is offered to TJCA-students and TJCA-staff who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or have had close contact with someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19.
Why is TJCA testing for COVID-19?
Testing is a safe, effective way to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and help keep our schools open for in-person learning. Testing is important for children under 12 years old who are not yet able to get vaccinated against COVID-19, families, and staff with younger children at home, and others who are not vaccinated or are otherwise at risk for getting seriously sick from COVID-19. Testing will help us keep students in the classroom and allow students to take part in the other activities they love.
How will the school protect the student/staff's privacy?
Testing results will be shared only for public health purposes (such as the Rutherford County Health Department), which may include notifying close contacts that they may have been exposed to COVID-19 and taking other steps to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in your school community.
How the program works How will the testing be done?
The COVID-19 tests will be free, quick, and easy. We will use a viral test, known as an antigen (rapid) test, which returns a result in as little as 15 minutes. This test will tell if the individual tested has a current COVID-19 infection, regardless of whether they have symptoms.
How is the test given?
The test will involve a nasal swab. It is a quick and easy test. This nasal test gently swabs the inner part of the lower nostril. The test is not painful. We do not use the longer swabs that reach higher into the nose.
When and where will the test be given?
Our school’s testing site will be located behind the high school gym and testing will be offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8 am to 10 am by appointment only. Upper Campus is located at 2527 US 221A HWY, Mooresboro, NC 28114.
How much does the test cost?
The COVID-19 tests will be free to TJCA-students and TJCA-staff. You will never receive a bill, and your insurance will not be charged.
When will we know the results of the test?
The results of the test should be available within 15 minutes.
Is the test reliable?
Tests can show a false negative. Sometimes—depending on the type of test and other factors—more testing to confirm a result may be recommended. Our antigen (rapid) tests were provided to by the Rutherford County Health Department and the NC DHHS COVID Testing Supply.
What if my child or a staff member tests positive?
We will ask you to keep your child home and for the staff member to stay home. They will be asked to provide information about potential close contacts so that everyone who has been exposed can be notified. A person diagnosed with COVID-19, cab return to school/work 10 days after their positive test or onset of symptoms. AND It has been at least 24 hours since the person had a fever (without using fever-reducing medicine), AND other symptoms of COVID-19 are improving. The person diagnosed with COVID-19 is not required to have documentation of a negative test in order to return to school/work.
