PROFILE UPDATED

The mission of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy is to achieve high academic results in secondary grade levels through the classical curriculum approach to academics. The primary goal is to give students the foundation necessary to improve and to expand learning opportunities.

"TJCA" is located in "Small Town Friendly" Rutherford County, NC. We are indeed "Small School Friendly" with a maximum enrollment of 80 students per grade. Majestic columns guard the front entrance. The tone of the academy is clearly "Classical."

However, the Greek style columns are not what make TJCA classical. The classical model of education is the key to its identity. The classical approach to education makes maximum use of the different developmental stages that children go through. The keys are dialectic, logic and rhetoric aided by the study of Latin and some Greek vocabulary.

Dialectic, also called the Socratic Method, is the use of questions and cross-examination to arrive at the truth. It is the method used in courts of law.

Logic is a discipline that helps one discern whether or not a statement or group of statements makes sense.

Rhetoric is persuasive speech. It is the art of clearly expressing your thoughts in a way that convinces others. Latin is not only the language of law, medicine and science, but is a very precise language that trains the mind, along with dialectic and logic, to focus and refine its intellectual powers.

Greek and Latin together help one understand English better because many English words come from these two ancient languages. Latin also helps prepare for the study of many other foreign languages.
